Modified Stableford Competition at the Barracuda Championship
“This is a stark contrast to a normal week on tour where players MUST hole out…”
30 JUNE, 2016
SINCE 2012 THE PGA TOUR HAS CONDUCTED A MODIFIED STABLEFORD COMPETITION AT THE BARRACUDA CHAMPIONSHIP AT MONTREUX GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB IN RENO, NV. THE INTERNATIONAL IN DENVER, CO AT CASTLE PINES COUNTRY CLUB HAD THE DISTINCTION OF HOLDING THIS COMPETITION FROM 1986 – 2006.
What makes this format so unique is that players do not have to hole out. Scoring in this format is made by receiving points that are awarded in relation to a fixed score at each hole.

The PGA Tour Modified Point Structure is as follows: Double Eagle +8, Eagle +5, Birdie +2, Par 0, Bogey -1 and Double Bogey or worse -3. Thus, a player does not have to hole out once he knows he can’t do any better than double bogey (-3 points). This is a stark contrast to a normal week on tour where players MUST hole out in order to prevent being disqualified.
“Making a 10 on a hole doesn’t knock you out of the competition…”
This format is one that players enjoy and can keep them all in the hunt due to the type of scoring format. Making a 10 on a hole doesn’t knock you out of the competition in the same way that it would at a standard stroke play competition.
We also encourage “high” scoring by making the par-4, 14th hole driveable on multiple days and keeping the tee on the par 5, 18th hole, up three of the four days.
Ironically, the winner of this tournament will have the highest score, not the lowest.
